CAR THEFT ARTICLE

As one might imagine, given the sheer size of the total vehicular population, older cars are appropriated by criminals each year in far greater numbers than are current models. The most popular one-year-old or older vehicle among car thieves last year was a 1996 Honda Accord, with 52,244 units reported stolen, according to the NCIB. Older cars are stolen far more often than brand new cars, largely because they’re typically taken to so-called “chop shops” where they’re quickly disassembled into replacement components that are subsequently marketed on Internet sites like Craig’s List and eBay and/or sold to unscrupulous auto part dealers. Some cars can be stripped of big-money components like flashy wheels, catalytic converters, and airbags right on the spot.
The Nissan Altima, Chrysler 200, and Toyota Camry midsize sedans were the most stolen new cars (from the 2015 model year) last year, according to the annual “Hot Wheels” list compiled by the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) in Des Plaines, Ill. Meanwhile, the Honda Accord and Civic sedans and the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado full-size pickup trucks were the most purloined models among used vehicles, with some later examples being nicked despite the proliferation of computer-chip-coded keys and built-in engine immobilizers.
"While older vehicles still dominate our Hot Wheels most stolen list, the number of late model vehicles with anti-theft protection on the list goes to show that technology isn't foolproof," says NICB President and CEO Joe Wehrle. "Criminals are doing their best to defeat anti-theft technology through hacking and other means while, at the same time, manufacturers and others are working to improve security.”

Here’s the NICB’s list of the most-stolen used cars last year:
1996 Honda Accord, 52,244 units stolen last year.
1998 Honda Civic, 49,430 units stolen last year.
2006 Ford F-Series, 29,396 units stolen last year.
2004 Chevrolet Silverado, 27,771 units stolen last year.
2014 Toyota Camry, 15,466 units stolen last year.
2001 Dodge Ram, 11,212 units stolen last year.
2014 Toyota Corolla, 10,547 units stolen last year.
2015 Nissan Altima, 10,374 units stolen last year.
2002 Dodge Caravan, 9,798 units stolen last year.
2008 Chevrolet Impala, 9,225 units stolen last year.

Here’s the NICB’s list of the most-stolen new cars last year:
Nissan Altima, 1,104 units stolen last year.
Chrysler 200, 1,069 units stolen last year.
Toyota Camry, 923 units stolen last year.
